Equis Australia Advances Calala Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

Equis Australia (Equis) has reached financial close and commenced construction on the Calala Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), a 250MW/500MWh BESS, located in Tamworth, New South Wales (NSW). Calala BESS will be instrumental in supporting New South Wales’ renewable energy targets. With a power capacity of 250MW and an energy storage capacity of 500MWh, Calala BESS, has enough power to supply electricity for up to 115,000 homes during peak periods.

Key Milestones and Project Details

  • Equis Australia has achieved financial close and initiated construction for the Calala Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), advancing one of Australia’s largest utility-scale battery portfolios.
  • The Calala BESS boasts a power capacity of 250MW and an energy storage capacity of 500MWh, with full operational status anticipated by 2027.
  • Equis secured a $260 million non-recourse senior debt financing package from Westpac, Societe Generale, and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC Group) for the project.
    • This financing marks the first merchant BESS debt financing in New South Wales, representing a significant milestone in the state’s renewable energy transition.
  • A long-term offtake agreement with SmartestEnergy Australia underpins the 100MW/200MWh portion of the battery, covering 100% of its capacity.
  • The remaining 150MW/300MWh portion will operate as a merchant BESS, utilizing Tesla’s real-time trading platform, Autobidder.
  • Equis has contracted Tesla to supply 138 Tesla Megapacks, Consolidated Power Projects (CPP) for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of the balance of plant, and Transgrid to manage the connection to the Tamworth Substation.
  • As the project progresses, Equis plans to strengthen its relationships with the local community and collaborate closely with the Tamworth Regional Council throughout the asset lifecycle to develop initiatives supporting the Tamworth community.
