Queensland’s landmark CopperString (2032) Project has received Coordinator-General approval with conditions, marking a major milestone for the state’s energy future and the North West Minerals Province.

What is CopperString? CopperString is an approximately 1,000 kilometre high-voltage overhead electricity transmission line connecting the resource-rich North West Minerals Province to the National Electricity Market (NEM). The project is being delivered by Powerlink Queensland (Queensland Electricity Transmission Corporation).

The Route The transmission line will run between Townsville and Mount Isa, with a southern connection linking Dajarra Road Substation through to Selwyn and Woodya Substations — passing through eight local government areas including Mount Isa City, Cloncurry, McKinlay, Richmond, Burdekin, Charters Towers, Flinders, and more.

Key Infrastructure

  • 500kV transmission line from south of Townsville to Hughenden
  • 330kV line from Hughenden to Cloncurry
  • 220kV line from Cloncurry to Mount Isa
  • Up to six new substation sites
  • Ancillary infrastructure including worker accommodation camps

Economic Impact

  • 💰 $5 billion total investment
  • 👷 Up to 750 FTE construction jobs
  • ⚡ 30 FTE operational jobs

Why It Matters CopperString is a critical piece of Queensland’s energy transition puzzle. By connecting the North West Minerals Province to the NEM, it opens the door for renewable energy development in remote Queensland, supports the state’s critical minerals sector, and lays the groundwork for a cleaner, more resilient grid.

The Coordinator-General’s EIS evaluation report was released on 28 September 2022, with a lapse date now extended to 28 September 2028, giving the project a clear runway for delivery.

At energplanning.com.au, we’ll be tracking this project closely as it progresses through construction and into operations. Stay tuned for updates on approvals, contractor appointments, and construction timelines.
